Children may be born with a variety of abnormalities. Most of them can be corrected by a highly experienced pediatric surgeon who knows how to confirm the diagnosis, prepare the tiny infant for surgery, perform the delicate operation, and provide intensive post-operative care. Examples include intestinal blockages, lack of an anal opening, incomplete formation of the esophagus, hernia of abdominal organs through a hole in the diaphragm, and a large hernia of intestine in to the umbilical cord. Many of the problems are very rare, and developing the skills to care for such infants takes many years. Dr. Liebert has performed major corrective surgery on premature infants as small as 1 pound, 5 ounces.
